James Adger Smyth papers, 1876-1935 (bulk 1876).

Papers consist of letters to James Adger Smyth, orders, lists, and a report concerning the organization and operations of the "alarm men" of Ward 1 of Charleston, South Carolina, and a typewritten transcription (n.d.) of the U.S. citizenship oath. Letters (1879) to Smyth concern his appointment as 1st Lieutenant of the "Ward 1 organization," the purpose of the organization, Smyth's appointment to the South Carolina State Democratic Executive Committee, and other matters. Correspondents include A.C. Haskell and J.J. Pringle Smith. Materials relating to the "Ward 1 organization" include a list (1876 Sept. 13) of rallying locations for the alarm men of Ward 1 and instructions for their assemblies, handwritten orders (1876 Sept. 28) by Joseph A. Yates (commander), a list (n.d.) of alarm men and their posts, a "Report of Effective Strength of Ward 1" (n.d.) which states that "This report does not include members of rifle clubs, but firemen, who will report in the event of alarm, without fire," and a typewritten transcript (1935) of a list [ca. 1869?] of "warners" of Ward No. 1 of Charleston, S.C.
